Bromelain – Nature’s Remedy For Sinusitis

head coldSo, you have a stuffy nose or allergies and are looking for a natural alternative therapy.  What to do?

As a natural pharmacy, we frequently have customers asking us for a natural treatment for sinusitis and nasal congestion as an alternative to some of the conventionally available sinus preparations on the market.  We get a lot of questions because allergies such as hay fever are the fifth leading chronic disease in the United States, resulting in approximately 4 million lost work days each year!

One of the best natural options is actually an enzyme called Bromelain, which can be used alone in the treatment of sinusitis or in combination with Quercetin for the natural treatment of allergic rhinitis.

Bromelain is a proteolytic digestive enzyme that is extracted from the stem of the fruit of the pineapple plant.  When taken with food it can assist in the digestion of proteins.  When taken on an empty stomach, studies have shown that it can act medicinally as an anti-inflammatory.

Bromelain has been used in numerous clinical trials involving its effect on inflammation, bruising, skin disorders, and sinusitis, with minimal side effects reported.  In fact, the expert panel, German Commission E, approved Bromelain for the treatment of swelling and inflammation of the nose and sinuses caused by injuries or surgery.

Let’s talk about the few side effects and safety concerns to be aware of with Bromelain.

The most common reported side effects with Bromelain were gastric upset and diarrhea, so use caution if you have a gastrointestinal disorder or ulcer.  Some studies have also indicated an increase in prothrombin time, so anyone on anticoagulant medications should only use Bromelain under the supervision of their physician.  If you have an allergy to pineapple, Bromelain should be avoided.  Also some studies have shown that allergic reactions may occur in people with latex allergies.

Understanding the precautions, know that Bromelain has been in use since 1957, and has been the subject of many clinical trials.  It’s use in inflammation and sinusitis has been substantiated by clinical evidence.  So, if you’re looking for an effective natural therapy for your sinusitis or allergies, consider Bromelain.

As always, if you have any questions, just let us know and we can help!

Be Well.
